Ways Lawn Care Crews Can Stay Cool in the Summer Heat

Working as a lawn care provider in high heat temperatures can be challenging, but with the right precautions and practices, you can ensure the well-being of yourself and your equipment while still providing quality service to your clients. Below are some tips to help you beat the heat.

Stay Hydrated – Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and take sips frequently. Avoid sugary or caffeinated drinks as they can lead to dehydration.

Dress Appropriately & Use Protective Equipment- Light-colored, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing are the best for working outside in the summer months. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to further protect you from the sun’s rays. Wear gloves and other protective gear when working with tools and chemicals to prevents burns and irritation.

Sunscreen – Apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. Reapply regularly is you are sweating.

Monitor Yourself – Throughout the day, pay attention to your physical condition and watch for signs of heat-related illnesses. These symptoms include but are not limited to dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or confusion. In the case that you experience any of these symptoms, seek shade for rest immediately and let your crew leader know.

Take Breaks – Whenever possible, or if you begin to feel any of the above symptoms, take a break in the shade. Taking small breaks in the shade regularly will help prevent the onset of the above symptoms and keep you on schedule.

Remember the safety of your own well-being and your teams should always be a priority. By practicing these tips, you can make sure that you are staying safe while providing outstanding lawn care services even in the high heat temperatures of St. Louis summers.
